This gripping, deeply thoughtful book considers the future of civilization in the light of what we know about climate change and related threats. David Orr, an award-winning, internationally recognized leader in the field of sustainability and environmental education, pulls no punches Even with the Paris Agreement of 2015, Earth systems will not reach a new equilibrium for centuries. Earth is becoming a different planet - more threadbare and less biologically diverse, with more acidic oceans and a hotter, more capricious climate. Furthermore, technology will not solve complex problems of sustainability. Yet we are not fated to destroy the Earth, Orr insists. He imagines sustainability as a quest and a transition built upon robust and durable democratic and economic institutions, as well as changes in heart and mindset. The transition, he writes, is beginning from the bottom up in communities and neighborhoods. He lays out specific principles and priorities to guide us toward enduring harmony between human and natural systems.

I have been troubled by what seems to me to be our worsening situation (vis-à-vis climate change, materialism, politics, etc) and I've been at a loss as to what I can do about it. Now I know one thing I can do is urge everyone I meet to read this book. The book is full of wisdom, analysis and a little anger. Read it. You won't be disappointed.Product details

Dangerous Years Climate Change the Long Emergency and the Way Forward (Audible Audio Edition) David W Orr Danny Campbell Tantor Audio Books Reviews
David Orr writes with grace and vigor. In this book, he confronts the most urgent issue of the century--how to deal with the drastic changes in climate that lie ahead--with incisive analysis (based on his broad reading and familiarity with relevant scholarship) and practical wisdom. His thought is a gift to our troubled age.
Orr is always where it's at for me.
A very important book. It should be compulsive reading for every elected official.
One of the most comprehensive books on climate change I have read
It should a must read for people who believe in Global Warming is real. It's scary but also an eye opener.
If only everyone could read this book!! This book has enlightening, scary, and inspiring all at the same time. I can't get it out of my head and I recommend it every chance I get.
For anyone who wants to learn more about the inevitable consequences of climate change, and analysis of all of the various related issues, I highly recommend this book. In this book, David Orr presents to us the concept of the "Long Emergency", and all of the challenges we're going to have to tackle if we're going to survive it, such as finding a way to cooperate as a species, getting money out of politics, reforming education, and making fundamental shifts in the economy so it becomes sustainable. I'm skeptical that we'll be able to make these changes in time, and that instead, we're going to have to face the only other alternative that is presented in this book change by way of catastrophe. My only major criticism of this book is a superficial one almost every sentence contains at least one long, comma-delimited list of words. This is the same style of writing you'll find in Jared Diamond's work, like Guns, Germs, and Steel, and Collapse. It's like every sentence talks about desertification, deforestation, erosion, disease, loss of biodiversity, political upheaval, android revolt, and on and on for many, many, many more commas in a depressing list of increasingly awful things. But if you can endure many, many, many long lists of things, stuff, objects, concepts, and thoughts, you will find this book enlightening, interesting, inspiring, thought-provoking, enraging, and essential. Either way, I highly recommend this book! Read it and do something!
